Relatives include the widespread duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the first stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of dying and human-like physique temperatures, creep inside the vase-like construction and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive feminine flowers. During the second stage, the structure begins to break down, the "perfume" fades and the bugs start to go out. As they go away, the beetles rub up against the pollen within the male flowers and are now prepared to carry the pollen to a close-by female flower. Only a handful of these strange Indonesian plants bloom every year at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the one known garden within the region that grows this unique species.
