Relatives include the widespread duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the first stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of demise and human-like body temperatures, creep contained in the vase-like structure and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive feminine flowers. During the second stage, the construction begins to break down, the "fragrance" fades and the bugs begin to move out. As they leave, the beetles rub up towards the pollen within the male flowers and at the moment are ready to carry the pollen to a nearby feminine flower. Only a handful of those strange Indonesian plants bloom every year at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the one identified backyard within the region that grows this unique species.
