Relatives include the frequent duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the first stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of dying and human-like physique temperatures, creep contained in the vase-like construction and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive female flowers. During the second stage, the construction begins to break down, the "perfume" fades and the insects start to go out. As they go away, the beetles rub up against the pollen within the male flowers and are now ready to hold the pollen to a close-by female flower. Only a handful of those strange Indonesian plants bloom annually at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the one recognized backyard in the region that grows this exotic species.
